Global Days of Reflection

2013
The first Day of Reflection took place at the Vatican in September 2013. Convened by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, this meeting brought together 19 industry representatives (many CEOs), 15 high-level individuals representing church groups and one NGO, Oxfam America.
2014
A second Day of Reflection was jointly convened by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the President of the Methodist Conference and held at Lambeth Palace. Senior church leaders, CEOs of mining companies, academics and NGO representatives shared perspectives and reflected on how the mining industry impacted society and the environment.
2015
During the third Day of Reflection hosted at the Vatican, it was agreed that "there was sufficient confidence to build something together that was more formal, planned and long term". Key actions included: establishing a common vision, setting more defined outcomes, combining dialogue at the global level with action at a local level, and developing a more formal structure.
2019
A fourth Day of Reflection took place at the Vatican in May 2019 when participants were addressed by His Holiness Pope Francis.
2020–21
Virtual Days of Reflection were held in October 2020 and October 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
2022–23
Face to face meetings resumed at Church House, Westminster.
2024–26
The MFRI road tested a new approach to global level dialogue by hosting a constructed dinner for reflection in Westminster, a model which was repeated in 2025 and will be again in 2026.

1-1 Engagement

Alongside the Days of Reflection, the MFRI supports direct engagement between faith leaders and senior mining executives. This takes place through a range of formats designed to build trust and deepen mutual understanding outside of formal dialogue settings.

Support MFRI Participation in Key Industry Events

The MFRI supports the attendance of faith leaders at major mining industry events, enabling them to engage directly with the sector and build relationships with key stakeholders. Recent participation has included:

  • ICMM (International Council on Mining and Metals) Responsible Mining Leadership Forum
  • PERUMIN 2025
  • Mining in Motion 2025

Convene Faith Leader Roundtables

The MFRI supports annual events bringing faith leaders together to engage with critical issues at the intersection of mining, society and the environment. These roundtables provide a space for faith leaders to share experiences, align on shared values, and strengthen their collective voice in dialogue with the mining industry.
